Fossil Fuel Cuts Database

First released in 2018, the Fossil Fuel Cuts Database provides the first global account of supply-side initiatives to constrain fossil fuel production. By early 2022, almost two thousand initiatives – undertaken by governments and civil societies alike – have sought to keep fossil fuels underground by limiting extraction and transportation. Motivated by economic, political, or climate concerns, actors have employed a range of direct and indirect means to do so. The database covers seven constraint instruments: divestments, blockades, litigations, moratoria & bans, emissions trading schemes, carbon taxes, and subsidy removals.

By systematically documenting growing efforts to 'leave fossil fuels underground', the Fossil Fuel Cuts Database provides an entry point to the supply-side governance of a low-carbon future.
